It was dress-up day at school the other day. Ben, of course, went as a Pokemon trainer. Lizzy dressed as a cat. And Thomas? Ever the individual, he was the only child in prep who refused to dress up at all. "I'm going as a school boy", he told me. What gravel looks like, for reference. Exiwolfs, I believe they were.Since then, I've ridden so many different tires I could not possibly remember them all. That is to say, I've ridden my fair share of tires, and there are a few things that make a tire "good" in general. You can guess the first thing- weight. No one wants to spin up a big, heavy tire, especially up a long grade. The other thing that is apparent to many riders is the way the tire's casing "works". This lube seems to shed the dust fairly well, and although you get a little dirty residue when you draw your fingers across the rollers, it is not totally dry, and the chain is silent yet. The cassette is fairly clean and free from gunk so far. The jockey wheels on the rear derailleur are still looking fair. Paolo Roversi's Secrets at Fotografiska was the most enticing Stockholm secret I'd been waiting all autumn to uncover it seems… We went round slowly, silently, almost meditatively. I honestly don't remember an exhibition with such a tangible atmosphere, beckoning to slow down and drink in so much beauty - familiar images that were suddenly enveloped in a new type of intimacy, others I'd never seen before, leaving me to wonder how that was possible. A glass of wine and the other two exhibitions before returning once more, almost in an attempt to hold on to every trickling drop of the magical aesthetic. A chance to share our secrets, too, and pick up a few that are still waiting to be opened at Christmas. Every photograph enters the world with love, where the heart can see deeper than the mind, beyond appearances. It's week nine in our Cozy Christmas Sew Along. YaY! If you're just joining us. However, not all the museum's ancient Egyptian collection is equally robust, and much of it, especially pieces made of wood, textile, or papyrus, is usually kept under wraps. Visitors to the museum this winter therefore have the otherwise rare opportunity to see some of this fragile material taken out of storage and put on show in the museum's current major exhibition, Journey through the Afterlife, the Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead, which explores ancient Egyptian attitudes to death and the afterlife. The exhibition includes hundreds of fragments of papyrus, grave goods, sarcophagi and other items, most of them drawn from the British Museum's collections, and focuses on the instructions left in ancient Egyptian tombs to help the dead navigate through the afterlife, the so-called Book of the Dead. I want to use this post to talk a little about the enlistment and training process in the late Victorian British Army. I cover this in some of my military history talks and I think it’s useful in helping to understand the typical Victorian infantryman’s career path. I’m going to use some real examples in what follows, and for the purpose of this essay I’m going to assume an enlistment term of seven years with the colours and five on the reserve. The story begins with the man’s attestation, that is, his contract to serve with the British Army for a given period of time. This attestation could take place at regimental depots or it could take place during recruiting drives. .
